About North 24 Parganas
History:
The North 24 Parganas placed in the Presidency are made up of 5 subdivisions of the Greater 24 Parganas namely Barasat (Headquarters), Barrackpore, Basirhat, Bangon and Bidhannagar (a satellite township of West bengal, popularly known as Salt Lake). According to Ptolemy's Geography, written in the second century A.D., the ancient land of Gangaridi was extended between the Bhagirathi-Hoogly (lower Ganges) and Padma-Meghna rivers.
